5 NCAA College Basketball Games To Watch This Weekend
November 14, 2014 - 10:18 pm
Friday, Nov. 14
Minnesota vs. Louisville
Players To Peep: Louisville: Quentin Snider, Wayne Blackshear (pictured above)
Reason To Watch: It was only two seasons ago that the Louisville Cardinals won a National Championship. The Cardinals are coached by legendary sideline leader Rick Piton and could very well win another title this year. That’s not to dismiss Minnesota, a team that’s always on the cusp on making a real run at the tournament. No doubt both teams want to set the tone for the season with a big win tonight. Should be a dog fight.
North Carolina Central at North Carolina
Players To Peep: North Carolina: Kennedy Meeks, Marcus Paige (pictured above), Justin Jackson
Reason To Watch: The school that brought us Kenny “The Jet” Smith, Vince Carter, Michael Jordan and other outstanding NBA players has seen some serious struggles in the past few seasons. Led by big Kennedy Meeks, a 280-pound Big Baby-esque player, has NBA game. Teammate Marcus Paige might be the most exciting guard in college basketball this season. Don’t miss the start of Coach Roy Williams Tar Heel revival.
Sat., Nov. 15
Fairfield at Duke
Players To Peep: Duke: Tyus Jones (pictured above), Jahlil Okafor
Reason To Watch: Other than Drake’s favorite college team, Coach Cal’s Kentucky Wildcats, the Duke Blue Devils have the deepest team in college basketball. The 2014 crop of freshmen might be the best incoming class they’ve ever landed, and the duo of Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor have a shot at being one of the greatest guard-big-man combos in college basketball history. To give you a little perspective, experts compare Jones to Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul and Okafor to the likes of the great Shaquille O’Neal. Don’t sleep. Watch. This. Game.
Sunday, Nov. 16
Buffalo at Kentucky
Players To Peep: Kentucky: Dakari Johnson, Tyler Ulis, Devin Booker
Reason To Watch: Believe it or not, the Kentucky Wildcats are worth watching even when Drake isn’t embarrassing himself with his horrible jumper. It’d be disrespectful to the pros to say this group of college kids could contend with the worst NBA team (seeing as how that’s probably the Lakers — and Kobe would have no parts of letting a college team beat his team, achilles or no achilles) but they’d at least score some points and catch a few highlight dunks. This team came up short in the NCAA Championship last year and all they did in the offseason was get better. There’s a chance that half the tea will be playing Draft Day by this upcoming June, prepping to make that NBA jump.
Cs Northridge at Arizona
Players To Peep: Arizona: Gabe York, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Stanley Johnson (pictured above)
Reason To Watch: If Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan make up the trio that is Lob City, Arizona's Gabe York, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Stanley Johnson make up Lob University. Hard to find a team with more bounce than the 2014-15 version of the Arizona Wildcats. If exciting plays aren’t enough, just keep an eye out for Johnson. The kid is the most NBA ready college freshman in the country. He’s 6-foot-7, 245 pounds of pure talent. Don’t believe us? He went toe-to-toe with NBA legend Tracy McGrady and held his own.
