Reason #1: This movie is long overdueWhile two posthumous Aaliyah albums have been released, we haven't seen her on the big screen in over 10 years. Remember how well Lil Mama portrayed Left Eye? We need to recapture that essence on film.
Although Zendaya is 17 years old, Aaliyah was always wise beyond her years and wasn’t your typical teenager. She was adventurous and unconventional image at the time with her tomboy image. This movie will show that Aaliyah was your fave, before your fave became your fave.
Reason #2: This movie proves that Aaliyah still has a hold on modern pop culture. We all know how passionate Drake feels about Aaliyah. From his numerous Aaliyah references in his songs, to his open letter, to his infamous tattoo of her face on his back, he has reintroduced Aaliyah to a generation that hasn’t spent much time with her.
There are some singers out right now who have an obvious fondness of her image, and it’s interesting seeing not so old school being fused with the newer school. Numerous artists (i.e. Cassie, Ciara) have taken a page from her four-page letter and referenced her either verbally or visually.
Reason #3: We might find out what really happened. You know what we’re talking about. For years, there was always that “did they?” or “didn’t they” question in regards to Aaliyah’s relationship with R. Kelly. Amidst rumors that they were married on August 31, 1994 with an annulment soon after, this movie will hopefully shed some light on the early years of Aaliyah’s career.
Although details from this era are never spoken of, we know there's a way this can be addressed, without any integrity being compromised from any of the parties involved. With the movie premiering on Lifetime, the network has shown in the past that they aren’t afraid to push the boundaries.
Reason #4: It could bring Missy Elliott out of the woodworks.Long-time Aaliyah collaborator Missy Elliott has been noticeably absent from the music scene. Can this movie inspire Missy to dust off those bedazzled Adidas tracksuits and grace a stage with some dance moves?
Although Missy hasn’t been active (partially due to her battle with Grave's disease), she's always been a dominant force in pop culture. Here's hoping this movie allows her to reclaim her throne in the rap kingdom.
Reason #5: 90’s Nostalgia.Aaliyah rose to fame in the mid-'90s and her fashions weren’t worn by anyone else. While Monica, Brandy and Mya had the cute outfits, Aaliyah was streetwear personified. She embraced an image that felt natural to her and made it chic to be comfortable. Seeing the Tommy Hilfiger apparel, coupled with her trademark bang and sunglasses, we'll be able to relive those sorely missed '90s moments.
