5 Reasons Why Kyrie Irving’s Worth His New $90M Contract

June 30, 2014 - 9:09 pm by Terrence Watson

A once in a lifetime talent like LeBron James bolting from any organization would be hard to deal with, but especially for a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s one thing to be remembered as that team the Michael Jordan ethered when he his the first game winner that people would call “the shot” in his career, but to survive one of the guys who could legitimately be his NBA heir leaving and winning tittles in another town? That takes some serious luck.

Apparently, the Cavs have mad luck on stash. Not only did they land a No.1 pick that turned into Kyrie Irving, they won another NBA lottery that allowed them to draft Andrew Wiggins. Just to make sure Uncle Drew doesn’t dip a la LeBron, Cleveland reps reportedly flew to New Jersey just to offer Kyrie Irving a five year, $90M contract. BEst believe Irving’s worth every penny. Read on to find out why.

Kyrie’s Already A Legend Even though he’s only been in the league for three seasons, Kyrie Irving’s been Rookie of the Year, a two time All-Star and has won an All Star Game MVP. Not to mention, his incredible viral videos with Pepsi as Uncle Drew, the old timer that destroys unsuspecting young bloods at local parks. Irving’s doing his part to keep all NBA fans excited about the Cavs.

Players Want To Play With HIm Cleveland already has issues with getting players to want to come and play in the city. Losing Kyrie to free agency wasn’t an option if they want to keep rebuilding. Now that Andrew Wiggins is there to play with Irving, it’s more likely other great players might want to call Cleveland home. Including the ones who left.

Kyrie’s Key To LeBron Coming Back LeBron James might be a lovable guy (when he wants to be) but that doesn’t mean he wants to play with just anyone. The teammates he had around him when he first put that Cavs jersey on were bench players at best and he dragged them to the NBA Finals. However, a lineup featuring Kyrie & Co. sounds a little sexier to everyone. James respects Irving enough to consider him a “little homie” and you could see how the King was proud of Kyrie at that the All Star Game when Irving won his first ASG MVP. Bringing LeBron back wont happen for the Cavs unless they keep Kyrie.

He’s The Youngest Player Doing It At 22-years-old, Kyrie’s the youngest player people would consider a franchise player. Irving is younger than 15 of the players picked in the recent NBC Draft and of all those who made this year’s All Star Game, only New Orleans’ Anthony Davis was younger than him (21). Given his age, a five year contract sets the tone for the Cavs as a franchise until Irving is 27. He’ll just be coming into the middle of his prime by the time they’ll need to negotiate another contract.

He’s A Once A Generation Star Players At Kyrie’s level come along once every 10 years or so. We could count the number of point guards that aren’t freakishly tall or athletic but can still dominate a game with skill? Isaiah Thomas begat Chris Paul begat Kyrie Irving. While Thomas never left the Pistons, Paul had to go from the Hornets but this deal keeps Kyrie in Cleveland. If he accepts it.
