7 Awesomely Awkward Drake Sports Moments

July 16, 2014 - 7:17 pm by Terrence Watson

Tonight, the two worlds of sports and hip hop collide once again when Drake hosts the ESPY’s. Given his acting background, and how well he did when he hosted SNL, expectations are high for the man who spends his Days In The East. Drake takes a lot of flack for team jumping and being caught in funny situations when it comes to pro sports. He’s definitely living out his famed “cuz we want to be them (athletes), and they want to be us" lyrics to the fullest. Before he hits the stage for ESPN tonight at 9 p.m. EST, lets look at some of his more awkward sports moments.

Plotting On The Low Drake’s not above succumbing to the thirst. If anything, he’s the ambassador for a generation of young men who have no shame in embracing their inner simp. In other words, when it comes to the public pursuit of the pum pum, Drizzy has no problem talking about his targets. Subliminal shots about Serena Williams (and Chicago rapper Common) became the talk of the tabloids for a hot minute.

Drake All In The Interviews Sometimes Drake gets a pass when he’s around his friends who play ball. This was not one of those times. He’s just kind of standing there, grinning, smiling and laughing away, chilling under then Kentucky Wildcat DeMarcus Cousin’s wing like a conjoined twin. Super awkward.

That Time He Couldn’t Celebrate With The Heat There aren’t too many times Drake gets shut down for access anywhere, these days. But after the Heat won their second title, Drake was denied access at the media entrance when tried to get into their locker room to celebrate with the team. He later laughed it off, saying he tried to get in as a joke, but the video of the incident doesn’t look like Mr. Graham was amused by anything at the time. It’s all good though because he and LeBron got to party that night at LIV and, well...

Drake Shares The King’s Spotlight After LeBron led the Heat to back-to-back NBA Finals, it was clearly The King's time to celebrate with the rest of Miami’s roster — and Drake. Listen, we know they’re close friends who support each other all the time, but it was a little strange for Drizzy to be right under LeBron in all the photos. He wasn’t with them shooting in the gym, but he was popping bottles with them in the club after they worked for their rings.

That Time He Celebrated With Kentucky At The Final Four OK, we get it. Drake is a big part of the Kentucky Wildcat family. He has a relationship with some of the players and, most notably, with Wildcats coach John Calipari. That’s cool and all, but it was a little strange when he showed up in the locker room mere moments after Kentucky’s big Final Four victory over Wisconsin. Not that he shouldn’t show love, but it was their moment and he kind of (unintentionally) stole the show.

Drake’s Post Game Picture After Kentucky’s Loss The jokes questioning Drake's loyalty were rolling in waves after Kentucky lost to UConn in the NCAA tournament title game. But when he takes pictures like this one with former Husky, NBA veteran Rip Hamilton, it’s easy to see why there are questions. He’s definitely a Wildcat fan but he just can’t escape the backlash when photos like these are all over the net.

That Time Drake Got In Kobe’s Business Drake drops a lot of sports references in his rhymes, most of which are on point. Then there are times we wish he wouldn’t be so light skinned and say things that he’ll end up back tracking on. When Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa were going through a very public possible split, Drake took it as an opportunity to chime in with his “Kobe’s bout to lose a 150 M’s” line on Stay Schemin’. Mrs. Bryant wasn’t too happy about being referred to as the bitch that wasn’t with Kobe shooting in the gym. Aubrey apologized later and all, but the damage was definitely done.
