7 Ways Bobby Shmurda Can Avoid Becoming A One-Hit Wonder

August 13, 2014 - 4:27 pm by Chris Yuscavage

Bobby Shmurda might as well claim part ownership in summer 2014. His hit single, "Hot Nigga," is everywhere. He's got everyone from Beyoncé to Justin Bieber doing his Shmoney Dance. And he's got a new deal with Epic Records. The kid is on fire.

But as we've learned time and again (we're looking at you, Trinidad James), one hit song can only take you so far. Before the summer ends, Shmurda will have to do whatever it takes to avoid being labeled a one-hit wonder. Here are 7 things he might want to consider.

1. Release the remix for "Hot Nigga" immediately. Shmurda recently revealed that Chris Brown, French Montana, Busta Rhymes and Jadakiss have contributed verses to his "Hot Nigga" remix. And to that, we say: Cool. But Shmurda needs to get that out, like, now unless he wants it to get lost in the shuffle. Lots of artists have dropped their own "remixes" and, little by little, the song is losing its potency. That remix needs to come out ASAP before the song's buzz dies down. Photo Credit: Getty Images

2. Find a way to shoot a video for the "Hot Nigga" remix. Want to make sure that the official remix reigns supreme above all of the other "Hot Nigga" remixes? Shoot a video for it. And in addition to having all of the artists who are featured on the song, include a ton of footage of famous people doing the Shmoney Dance. Photo Credit: Getty Images

3. Put out a mixtape featuring appearances from everyone who jacked the "Hot Nigga" beat over the last month. From Juicy J to T.I. to French Montana, a bunch of rappers have taken the "Hot Nigga" beat and turned it into their own song. In doing so, they've stolen some of Shmurda's shine. So it's only right that they do him a solid and collaborate on a mixtape. That'll ensure that people pay attention to Shmurda's next project—he says it's due out in September, but we think he needs to drop it even earlier than that—and allow people to pay him back. 4. Get in the studio and knock out as many songs with Jahlil Beats as possible. Rumor has it that these two are already spending time in the studio together. But truth be told, it wouldn't be a bad idea for Shmurda to turn over the production reins to Jahlil and let him do his thing. Even though the "Hot Nigga" beat wasn't originally intended for Shmurda (Lloyd Banks used it first back in 2012 when he recorded "Jackpot"), the two artists clearly have some chemistry and they should make the most of it. We wouldn't mind if Shmurda's entire debut was produced by Jahlil. Photo Credit: Getty Images

5. Find a new street single and start pushing it. This won't be easy. All anyone wants to hear from Shmurda right now is "Hot Nigga." But he needs to find another song that'll catch on and resonate with people. He's trying to do it with fellow GS9 artist Rowdy Rebel and the song "Computers" at the moment. But we think he'd probably be better served by putting out another solo single since people are still trying to familiarize themselves with him. Photo Credit: Getty Images

6. Go on a promotional tour outside of the NYC area. Shmurda's song is popular all over the country right now. But it feels like a lot of the shows that he's done so far have been in or around New York City. That's all well and good, considering he hails from the Big Apple. But in order for him to break out in other areas of the country, he'll have to hit the road and push his music. Otherwise, people will only know him for "Hot Nigga." Photo Credit: Getty Images

7. Have a plan in place that involves releasing a debut album way before the end of the year. Shmurda is reportedly working on his debut album, which is great. But we sincerely hope that Epic has a plan in place to put it out very soon. If they wait too long, the buzz behind "Hot Nigga" will die down and, eventually, people will move on to the next guy. Shmurda has too much going for him right now to allow that to happen. So he needs to get a release date soon in order to make the most of the moment he's enjoying right now.
