DJs In Wonderland: Producers As Your Favorite Characters
September 27, 2013 - 3:26 pm
With Insomniac's Beyond Wonderland festival going down this weekend (September 28-29) in Cali's Bay Area, VIBE couldn't help but wonder if the event's 'Alice In Wonderland' theme actually came to life with its lineup DJs inhabiting the roles of the story's timeless characters. Here's what we came up with. ->
Alice -> Arty
Releasing his first EP 'Vanilla Sky' at the age of 19 and signing with big-name trance label Anjunabeats a year later, 23-years-old Russian producer Arty proves that only the sky is the limit. Like Alice, a natural courageous and curious type, Arty has been blooming the past few years in the progressive trance/house scene. His name has also been on line-ups for EDC Las Vegas, Audiotistic Festival LA and Electric Zoo. As he moves forward relentlessly, collaborating with other big names like Mat Zo, he continues his journey in the Underland.
Mad Hatter -> Tiësto (older when fighting against the Red Queen), Hardwell (younger when serving the White Queen)
Here come the two Dutch club-floor dominating princes. Why Mad Hatter? You know it when you hear it. They are highly talented, stylish (Tiësto models for GUESS) and they deliver mad fun to the party. The catchy yet mature (sometimes even hardcore) house sound and unique big-room house recipe make everyone want to go wild and “Futterwacken.” Tiësto came out as a trance DJ but has been since stamping his “Tiesto brand” on progressive house and dubstep scene. On the other hand, 25-year-old DJ and producer Hardwell is much like a younger version of Tiësto, dominating top dance charts with a slightly lighter tone in his music. Coming from the same town Breda of Netherlands, Hardwell and Tiësto often collaborate in productions and live performances.
Cheshire Cat -> Damian Lazarus
Probably the most elusive, mysterious and yet absolutely badass character throughout Alice’s journey. For this character, Damian Lazarus definitely crowns the correlation. Always in the frontier of experiments with sounds and embracing an eclectic taste of style, he is said to play “the best underground records in the world.” Old school live decks and effects that involve no laptop at all is definitely also a lookout during the festival.
Tweedle Brothers -> W&W
Remember the dumb and dumber Tweedle brothers? Well, there is no such thing as a clumsy DJ if the name is on the line-up for Beyond Wonderland. But we picked out one DJ brother duo out of the many this year because they are going to rock your world (with their talent that is.) This rising trance duo with Ward van der Harst & Willem van Hanegem is going out of control with their hardcore trance/house. W&W even has been put on the personal watchlist of industry leading names like Armin van Buuren. Rock on!
Chataway Girls -> Rebecca & Fiona
The only female duo on the list for Beyond Wonderland, but these girls are far from being a sidekick villain duo. They have been ruling the club scene back in Sweden before they played over 100 shows around the world with other major players in the game.
Bandersnatch -> Zeds Dead
Their unique brand of sound is like a giant beast roaming and stomping the ground. Raw power and badassitude. Any special power? Probably the most distinctive sound of Zeds Dead would be the highly distorted space synth and acid bass. They are the master when it comes to house music meeting dubstep.
The White Queen -> David Guetta
David Guetta takes your heart, wraps it with his sleek house groves, simmers it in a collage of electroclash sensations and then ingests it with some trance explosions. He is a two-time Grammy Award winner, a pop chart hit-maker and a true fun seeker who is constantly breaking down boundaries between genres. There is only one vow he never breaks: “I always just think of making people dance - that’s my first priority.”
Lastly, there is probably no space for the Red Queen. PLUR!
