6 Game-Changing Groups That Are Overdue For A Biopic

August 11, 2015 - 12:39 pm by Mark Braboy

From the Wu-Tang Clan to The Supremes, here are 6 acts who need real estate on the big screen STAT

Biopics are becoming a more frequent event than before. From the recent Lifetime Aaliyah flick Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B to VH1's CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, artists' life stories are becoming cinematic muses at a rapid rate.

READ: 7 Things We Want To See In N.W.A.’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Biopic

With the upcoming release of N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton this Friday (Aug. 14), the West Coast rap squad will be bringing their fiery bars and f*ck-tha-police mentality to the big screen to the delight of many hip-hop heads. And if that's not enough reason to celebrate biopic SZN, BET will also be rolling out a New Edition 'pic for a TV movie in 2016.

To keep the momentum going, VIBE wrangled up a list of other acts who also deserve a biographic film in theaters. Lights, camera, action!

Wu-Tang Clan

The Wu has been laying down classic albums, as a group and individually, since the early '90s. While RZA says an Ol' Dirty Bastard biopic (or two) are in the works, spotlighting the interesting backstories of the group's nine members sounds like a popcorn-grabbing affair. From the evolution of the Clan's careers to the making of Enter The Wu-Tang Clan and the tragic death of Ol' Dirty Bastard, expect a brotherly drama about family, the music business, power and success.

Destiny's Child

As one of the definitive R&B groups of the '90s and 2000s, Destiny's Child ran the world, making pint-sized feminists out of their Stanbase with songs like "Survivor" and "Say My Name." While the group split and casted different members over the course of their career, their meteoric rise to the top of Billboard charts to Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle's solo successful careers would be a big-screen lesson in flourishing.

Cash Money Records

The dominant Cash Money Records has had an iron grip on hip-hop for almost two decades. Backtracking to the days where CMR took over for the '99 and 2000, cameras would follow the rags-to-riches story of brothers Bryan "Birdman" Williams and Ronald "Slim" Williams as well as the success of the Hot Boys (Lil Wayne, Juvenile, BG and Turk) and the birth of Young Money with Drake and Nicki Minaj to Weezy and Birdman's beef. Tentative title pitch: Mo Money, Mo Problems.

The Supremes

While The Supremes served as inspiration for films like Sparkle and Dreamgirls, they also contributed to girl groups becoming the go-to trend in music. Whispers in 2010 of Faith Evans starring in a biopic about The Supremes' Florence Ballard floated in the air until the songstress walked away from the project that never came to fruition. There's also no doubt that the group ensembles in the potential flick would slay the Internets today.

The Fugees

With controversy surrounding The Fugees both during and after the '90s hip-hop group's run, there's enough material for a full-length feature on Wyclef Jean, Lauren Hill and Pras. L. Boogie and the Refugee Camp's story would not only outline their career, producing the 1996 classic The Score, a love triangle and their solo endeavors but a trio who wasn't afraid to throw fists in the air for social change.

Three 6 Mafia

As the forefathers of crunk, DJ Paul and Juicy J helped pave the way for Memphis and Southern hip-hop before it penetrated the mainstream. While money matters and intergroup drama sometimes overshadowed their success, there isn't much that formally profiles the first rap group to win an Oscar.
