Interview: Austin Mahone Talks New Album, Dream Collabos, Headlining ‘Artists To Watch’ Tour
As Pop singer Austin Mahone patiently waited on "Grand Theft Auto V" to drop, the 17-year-old had his eyes fixed on another game, Ubisoft’s “Just Dance 2014.”
At the Boy Meets Girl fashion show (Sept. 12) in New York City, the Young Money/Cash Money Records partner performed as the opening act for designer Stacey Igel's clothing showcase, which was inspired by the "Just Dance” game, due out October 8. The get-up-and-move video features music that rocked the charts this summer, including "Blurred Lines,” "Get Lucky," and now Mahone’s lead single “What About Love.”
“I’m probably going to get it so I can dance to my own song and it’s pretty cool,” said the excited teenager. “I’ve never had something of mine be on a video game before so I’m pretty excited.”
With a style that he describes as “cool,” the laid back singer is also gearing up to have his music heard on another platform. His debut album, which is still in the process of being named, is shaping up for an imminent release. “I’m working in the studio to finish it up and we are aiming for end of this year. I want it to be perfect for my Mahomies!” he said.
Mahone said the sound of the compilation would be fun and more Pop/R&B songs that listeners will be able to relate to as well as do as the game says and “get up and dance to.”
Recording the freshman album in Miami, Fl., Mahone worked with super-producers such as RedOne, Polo Da Don, Danja, Max Martin, and The Runners. Songs from dance-fused records to emotional ballads will lace the album, the “Say You’re Just A Friend” singer said. “I’m trying to get it perfect for all of my fans so that’s why it’s taking a little long.”
As for collaborations, the “Say Something” singer teases fans with not revealing the mysterious artists he has lined up on the album. “You just got to wait for the album to come out and see for yourself.” But a dream collaboration that he hopes to “make that happen” is Young Money/Cash Money’s affiliate Drake.
