'Love & Hip-Hop New York' Recap: Erica Mena Pops Off, Tara Plays Girlfriend No. 2
December 3, 2013 - 4:03 pm
1. Clueless Women + A Cheating Man = Trife Behavior
Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most clueless sidepiece wife of them all? At the beginning of the episode, we're subjected to yet another conversation between Peter and Amina over why Peter continues to behave like everything but Amina’s husband. Uh, because he doesn’t respect you and you allow him to disrespect you and the relationship you have with him. Duh. I don’t know where this woman left her last set of clues and self-esteem, but if someone could give me an address, I’d be happy to donate a flashlight to the rescue efforts.
Then there's Tara, who we’re supposed to feel sorry for, though that’s over (at least on my end) because last night she basically traded places with Amina over the role of girlfriend number two. Although she says it “kills her to have Peter around,” there was way too much flirtation and horseplay going on between the two to take such a claim seriously. Maybe you’re a masochist, Tara, but you’re taking an active role in perpetuating the madness.
Her “friend” K. Michelle tells her as much after Tara says she “called her out of the blue.” That sounds like reality TV jargon for, “A producer gave her my cell.” Whatever the case, at least K. Michelle is the voice of reason. Well, minus the shade K throws at “red skinned dudes.” You people can go to the front row of hell for all of this light skinned man slander.
Meanwhile, as Peter tells his wife one thing while trying to ask the mother of his children if he can “kiss it one last time,” he professes that if nothing else, he remains a great dad. He may treat his sons well, but he’s treating their mama like trash on national TV. Look at you, dad of the year!
2. Tahiry’s Sister Hasn’t Seen It For Her
Former Love & Hip-Hop cast member and colorful weave wearer Rasheeda Frost is getting hitched and Tahiry stops by as she tries on wedding dresses to spoil the moment by focusing on her sadness about not being married yet. To Tahiry’s credit, she does say that she doesn't want to ruin Rasheeda’s time by bringing up her problems. However, when you look like someone shot your puppy and your dreams with your gun, it’s kind of hard not to say, “Well, girl, just go ahead and let it out.”
I love Tahiry, but I would’ve sent her home. If I’m thinking about my wedding, the last thing I want to do is discuss a man everyone had already long concluded was problematic. Tahiry’s sadness goes beyond Joe, though. Tahiry reveals that she has a sister who's refused to speak to her for years. Her sister Lexi tells her flatly at the park, “Every relationship you’re in, we lose you.”
Up until very recently, they hadn’t spoken to each other for five years. Lexi reaches out over their dad being evicted from his apartment. Once the two meet face to face, the tears fall out of all four of their eye sockets and it looks as though they sort of make up. They’re no Beyoncé and Solange, but they’ll probably stop acting like the other one is Jermaine Jackson.
3. Yandy Wants Results But…
So Yandy yells at Rich Dollaz over him not landing any new talent for their joint label. I would feel bad for Yandy if not for the fact that Rich Dollaz started off on this show as Olivia’s manager and has since morphed into an on-camera personality. Shouldn’t that let you know how serious he is about being a major player behind the scenes, Yandy?
Later, Andy meets with an artist named J. Dinero. I just knew this woman was about to start singing like Ameriie. Instead, we get…Amil?
4. K. Michelle’s Assistant Cries Over Eating Fried Chicken
In a scene clearly designed to drum up interest in K. Michelle’s spinoff, we watch the Memphis singer chew out her assistant over being way too emotional. Apparently, she’s been a vegetarian for years and cries when she eats chicken with K and the crew. I only cry silent tears of joy when I’m eating spicy chicken strips, so I don’t know that life. To be honest, the segments are a complete waste of time. If you are curious to see a K. Michelle reality show, you likely remain curious to see a K. Michelle show. That said, last night probably didn’t do much in the way of convincing other people to give her future show a try.
5. The Sky Is Blue and Erica Mena Is Reckless
Before Rich and Peter Gunz try to have a peace meeting with Erica Mena that would lead to future business, Rich swears to Peter that Erica is more than just the hot head he previously butt heads with. Maybe, but if Erica can’t stand someone, she makes that painfully clear as fast as humanly possible. Just ask Kimbella. Now if I know this as just a viewer, why doesn’t Rich?
As soon as Erica and Peter are in front of each other, Peter tries to speak to her. Twice. She ignores him. Twice. When Erica does speak, she wastes no time expressing her anger over Peter being the reason she and Rich severed ties (personally and professionally) to begin with. She also brings up Peter’s hypocrisy. Erica turns to Rich, who didn’t warn her about this meeting beforehand, “What is this supposed to be? You know I don’t like this n***a.” Follow up question: “Why you got me around him?” Yes, Rich, why do you?
You know, Erica Mena has never been my favorite character on this show. She sometimes comes across as a combo missing a few chicken nuggets with cold fries. I won’t deny that the woman is good for a quote, though. When Peter tries to come for her, she does not back down. "Yeah, my tits is fake, but my mouth is real,” she snaps. My personal favorite: “You can’t handle my mouth, motherf**ker.” Congratulations, Erica, for delivering one of the all-time best reality show quotes ever.
And bless Rich’s heart for seemingly only now realizing that Erica Mena is reckless and will remain reckless with the utmost confidence. Bless you, Erica: If no one else on this show knows who they are, you surely do.
