More Than Music: Dipset's 10 Craziest Moments

November 26, 2010 - 5:33 pm by Chris Yuscavage TWITTER

The Moment: In 2001, Cam'Ron inked a solo deal with Jay-Z's record label Roc-A-Fella Records through his childhood friend/Hov's business partner Damon Dash. The deal called for a pair of solo projects from Killa and also included a clause that called for Cam to released a Diplomats album through the label. That album, Diplomatic Immunity, was released in 2003 and featured a slew of Just Blaze and Heatmakerz-produced hits.

The Moment: Not long after signing his deal with Roc-A-Fella, Cam's relationship with Jay-Z fizzled. And after Jay reportedly blocked Cam from being named Vice President of Roc-A-Fella Records—a move cosigned by Dame Dash—Cam jumped on several diss tracks and fired shots at Hov. The beef continued up through 2006 before Jim Jones got involved and started take shots at Jay as well and their beef continued off and on for the next five years.

The Moment: After making an appearance at the Howard University homecoming weekend in October 2005, Cam was shot twice in the hand after several armed suspects attempted to carjack his blue Lamborghini. Shortly after returning home, Cam released this classic statement: "People are foolish if they think I'm going to lose my head and give up anything to anyone just became someone threatens me. I'm doing OK. It takes more than a botched carjacking to keep me down." Or, as he said in "Get 'Em Daddy (Remix)," a diss track to Jay-Z he released shortly after the attempted carjacking: "Them shits was Scooby Snacks!"

The Moment: During a war of words with 50 Cent in May 2007, Cam filmed a now-infamous YouTube video of him standing in front of a swimming pool and calling for a "hot summer." But shortly after he released the clip, Fif responded by saying that he felt the beef had become irrelevant. "You're talking about a guy who sold 270,000 [copies of] his last record," he said. "I sold 9.8 million my last record. I'm not going to exhaust my audience by talking about somebody they have no interest in." The beef fizzled out over the course of the next few months and Cam disappeared off the scene for the next year. It was later revealed that he was caring for his ailing mother during his hiatus.

The Moment: In May 2007, Jim Jones came and out told Miss Info—a longtime friend and confidant of the crew—that he was no longer on speaking terms with Cam. "Me and Cam'Ron haven't spoken to each other in a year," he said. "I kept quiet out of loyalty. I felt like if we can't be friends, then at least we can do business together...But I'm through with being in hot water because of you. We still the Diplomats. We worked too hard to achieve our own success and now we're gonna do something new."

The Moment: During the first show on his 5 Borough Tour at Hammerstein Ballroom (the same stage where Dipset will hold their reunion) in September 2007, Fif brought Jim Jones and Juelz Santana on stage to perform with him, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks—despite the fact that the rival crews had been trading barbs. The appearance alongside Fif also served as a clear indication that Jones and Juelz were no longer on good terms with Cam'Ron.

The Moment: After seemingly disappearing off the face of the Earth for more than a year following his beef with 50 Cent and his now-public beef with Jim Jones, Cam'Ron reemerged in  August 2008 to reveal that he had "sold " Juelz Santana's recording contracting for $2 million. It actually sounded a lot worse than it was, though, as the move was simply designed to remove all the red tape 'Elz had been encountering while recording his third album, Born to Lose, Built to Win.

The Moment: Following nearly three years apart, Jim Jones revealed that he had reunited with Cam'Ron during an April 2010 interview with Miss Info. He also issued a public apology to Cam for not handling their separation better. "I apologize for being a rude brother," he said. "For saying things publicly without first trying to handle them privately. I apologize for not leading by example because what I didn't realize at the time, I was venting but it wasn't all about me. There were other people whose dreams were also part of this movement."

The Moment: A rumored Dipset reunion concert at Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert got thwarted in June 2010 after Jim Jones was denied entrance to the event at Giants Stadium.

The Moment: Shortly after Kanye West performed "Runaway" at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Cam and Jimmy jacked the instrumental to create "Toast Freestyle," a song that featured them taking shots at 'Ye. Ridiculous? Yes. But it's sure good to have the band back together again.   Are you excited to see Dipset reunite? Leave us a comment below and let us know!
