Photo Review: Salsoul Reunion At Summerstage

August 12, 2014 - 6:55 pm by Jorge Hernandez

Some tracks are so fundamental to dance music that forsaking their time-tested grooves, hooks, and vocals becomes a rite of passage in most DJ’s evolution. “My Love is Free,” “Doctor Love,” “I Got My Mind Made Up,” and “Call Me” are such tracks. They are just a few of the dance floor fillers that defined Salsoul Records, founded in 1974 by Joe Bataan with the aim of fusing Salsa and Soul music. They were also among the classics brought to vibrant life by First Choice, Double Exposure, Instant Funk, Ladies of Skyy, and Carol Williams under a perfect summer sunset at East River Park Summerstage on Wednesday, August 6th. The reunion was co-hosted by Salsoul and Mobile Mondays, New York’s long-running 45’s-only disco party. We caught up with Joey Carvello, Mobile Mondays’ co-resident DJ for a peek into the famed label’s history and how this reunion came together. All photos by Anna White. >>>

VIBE: Why did you choose Salsoul for this party? Joey Carvello: I was one of the first "1st Generation" disco deejays 1974. I was one of the pioneer deejays who could " move the dial " nationally. Nobody plays it like I do, it comes from my heart and soul! …. Where does Salsoul fit in with house, and the "EDM" scene? It doesn't. No two styles of dance music can be further apart. Ya don't need "X" or "molly" to grease ya wheels to get lifted by Salsoul! [NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!]

Any thoughts on Vince Montana who died recently? No Vince Montana, No Salsoul; No Salsoul, No Disco!

What happened to the Salsoul model [Ellen Michaels], the one famously looking over her shoulder in the black T-shit and no shorts? From what I understand she is a wildlife photographer here in NYC. Salsoul owes a lot to Philadelphia and Philly Soul – Philadelphia International Records, Sigma Sound studios – any of them make it "down to love town" for this gig? PI, Philly Groove, Gold Mind, Big Three and Salsoul were compadres… They played well together, the benefits between them was reciprocal. As a matter of fact Bobby Eli was in the house.
