Preview: Bob Marley's EDM Album Will Turn Up Summer 'Jamming'

May 28, 2013 - 4:28 pm by Sarah Polonsky

Why would anyone deign to make an EDM remix version for one of the most treasured reggae albums of all time? Numbers don’t lie; Bob Marley and The Wailers’ Legend sold over 40 million copies globally, and today’s EDM artists hope to bring a fresh new energy and flavor to it. Reggae purists will surely be a bit pissed off with anyone touching it. Albeit, both Ziggy and Stephen Marley not only approved their revolutionary father’s masterpiece getting the EDM treatment, both did some of their own remixes. Other brave souls who took on the challenge of reworking what many deem musical perfection—including, Pretty Lights, Thievery Corporation and Jason Bentley, to name a few—at the very least deserve props for their guts and gusto, love it or hate it.

Bob Marley’s message was always one of freedom—moreover the lyrics (“won't you help me sing, these songs of freedom”) from “Redemption Song” was the final tune Marley wrote from his deathbed. Keep an open mind as VIBE sheds light with a rundown of what to expect from Legend, Remixed because without growth, art is dead. There is no denying Bob Marley will live on forever through his songs. Now see topnotch producers take on this daring remix enterprise so they too can be part of Marley’s musical legacy. —@SarahPolonsky →

"I Shot The Sheriff" (Roni Size Remix) A definite standout edit on the remix album, Roni Size does what his drum and bass fans love him for. The Bristol beatsmith does not stray far from this reggae tune we all know and adore, yet, adds crisp jungle snares and high hat tatters. Size puts forth a summertime reggae tune turnt up to blissful, danceable and something no one could despise, not even that hater, Sheriff John Brown.

"Punky Reggae Party" (Z-Trip featuring Lee “Scratch” Perry Remix) This one is for the turntablist lovers who still harbor deep respect for the art form. Top quality scratching and blending is what you’d expect from award-winning scratch leader Z-Trip along with Reggae production great, Lee “Scratch” Perry. To see them perform this live would be most prodigious to get the punky party started.

"Redemption Song" (Ziggy Marley Remix) Five-time Grammy winner, Ziggy Marley, inserts rich instrumentation into the emotional reggae tune that brings tears to many eyes (ahem, this author included) to this day. The addition of what sounds like steady Cajon loops along with jazzy elements still pierce the heart, yet in a different way than before.

"Exodus" (Pretty Lights Remix) There’s still a very vivid presence of the original track in the Derek Smith (a.k.a. Pretty Lights) remix of "Exodus". He takes a chance by turning familiar lyrics and making them sound robotic. It will either turn your heart to metal or make you see the real shine of Mr. Light’s production ability.

"Buffalo Soldier" (Stephen Marley Remix) Generation Bro-step is calling. Stephen Marley takes a cue from the likes of Skrillex—quite a marvel considering Jamaican Dub was one of the first genres to inspire EDM. It all comes full circle with his mix, which includes a fully charged orchestra juxtaposed with American dubstep.
