'R&B Divas L.A.' Reunion Recap: Michel'le Speaks On Dr. Dre Abuse, Kelly Price Makes Amends

September 12, 2013 - 6:38 pm by Michael Arceneaux

I can’t believe that after 10 weeks, R&B Divas: L.A. is already over. TV One, can you all please bump up the budget and extend this show to at least a 12-episode order? As we wait that decision, I will salute the network on a great send off. Much like part one of the reunion, I didn’t want it to leave and much of that had to do with the wonderful Wendy Williams.

Keeping in line with the theme of last week – letting Wendy Williams loose in her rawest form – the ladies grilled each other on past actions, tried to settle some lingering beefs, and of course, clowning the absent Dawn Robinson. I will miss you, ladies. More than you know. —Michael Arceneaux (@youngsinick)

1. Kelly Price Keeps Trying It Fred didn’t mince words when asked if he felt better about the production of the monologues once Kelly Price and Dawn Robinson left, saying “yes” quickly after Wendy Williams posed the question. Still, Fred threw Kelly more bones than most would, given how big a fool she acted with him whenever the two were in the same room. Kelly tried to play the “producers told me to cut up” card, but Lil’ Mo and Chanté Moore weren't having it. Mo denied Kelly’s claim that she was told by producers that Fred wouldn’t be the “real” director and Chanté shut down talk of her meeting privately with Fred unbeknownst to Kelly. Ultimately, the topic shifted to why Chanté and Kelly stopped filming with each other and why Mo and Kelly were unable to make amends. I don’t want to parse Kelly and Mo’s purported differences on who the head of a household should be, but I will say there’s a noticeable pattern in Kelly Price throwing shade to her co-stars on and off camera. Kelly, you may be a wonderful person when the camera crew is around, but you sure do so when things get rolling and you two-step around the truth when called on it. Wendy asked her if she thought the production company behind the show made her look mean. She didn’t say yes directly, only noting that they had options and chose one. Chanté quickly noted that the camera crew couldn’t make her do any of what they filmed. Damn right, and let me add, Kelly, if you felt you were set up on the show in editing, try not to play into the “character” that was “created” during the reunion show. P.S. Wendy, I cackled like hell at the way you gently but firmly dismissed Fred from the couch after extracting all the information you wanted from him. That ain’t right. Thank you, though, Fred. You did a great job for someone stuck with all of that lunacy – sensationalized or not.

2. No One Likes You, Dawn Robinson Just because Dawn Robinson wasn’t around doesn’t mean Wendy Williams was going to let up on her frustrations with the former En Vogue star ducking the filming. Wendy asked about her group history with En Vogue and Lucy Pearl and that led to another attack on her presumed weaker than thou character. When asked if she regretted referring to Cindy Herron and Terry Ellis as “The Real En Vogue,” Lil’ Mo said no. Later, Mo’ explained how her car would be breaking down and they would have to pour water in it. Damn, girl. Why are you dodging the chance to sing “Free Your Mind” again? That said, Wendy behaved like an original En Vogue fan who never forgave Dawn and is enacting revenge. I don’t blame her, though, and Maxine, I’m mad at you, too, for ruining the reunion. After that, we caught a clip of Kelly Price’s monologues, which included Kelly acting out the molestation she suffered as a three-year-old child at the hands of her 18-year-old female cousin. Once we saw that, Kelly went on to further explain that this is the first time her family is learning of the sexual assault and how painful it was for the chance to share her story with her co-stars became “tainted” amid the creative differences. In turn, Lil’ Mo cried, citing Kelly’s rape as the reason she's so untrusting of people. Kelly ultimately gave hugs to each of the cast members. I want to believe it was genuine, but it came across kind of manipulative and like a Jedi Mind trick. I’m assuming Chanté felt the same because her eyes rocked to the side at times during Kelly’s performance remarks. By the way, when Kelly said that she always wanted to look like Chanté, that explained so much of her resentment towards her. Oh, Kelly. Just be beautiful and brown and back off that brown paper bag.

3. “Beats” By Dre Although I thought it was public knowledge, Wendy Williams inquired about the man responsible for breaking Miche’le’s nose. She revealed that it was Dr. Dre. He beat her so severely that she would have to cover up three black eyes on separate video shoots. That led to Wendy proclaiming, “Now you know why they’re called Beats by Dre. The accent is on the beef.” As for Suge Knight, she said that “he didn’t really beat me” and at one point asked him, “Why don’t you beat me? You don’t like me?” If you’re wondering, yes, she owned up to daddy issues and it was surprisingly Suge Knight who told her, “Girl, what?” I’m paraphrasing, but you get it. There was one fight between the two, but at this point in her life, she was ready to fight back. You know, that Miche’le will sit quiet for 20 minutes as everyone gabs, and then BOOM, she comes out with stories about some of the biggest figures in modern history. How does she not have a My Life like album already?

4. There’s Finally Going To Be An R&B Divas Tour The cast members of R&B Divas: Atlanta couldn’t get themselves together, but Kelly Price revealed that there will indeed be a tour featuring the women of the popular reality franchise. This includes co-headliners Kelly Price and Faith Evans, plus Dawn Robinson, KeKe Wyatt, Brownstone and Chanté Moore. Kelly says the promoter chose the lineup, but the shade remained among the women on the couches who are not a part of the bill. Lil’ Mo dismissed suspicion of feeling a ways, quipping she’s “ratchet” and “crossover” while that bill is more “urban A/C.” Uh, that was a funny response, but she can’t possibly believe that to be true, can she? Like, who is Lil’ Mo crossing over in 2013? The street? Love your voice, Mo, but in 2013, you better hope and pray for an urban A/C hit because that’s the market more inclined to play your songs. Miche’le said she was confused and not sure if she was asked or not. Well, Miche’le, you can definitely take the place of Dawn Robinson. “She ain’t got no songs to sing…especially not on key,” as Lil’ Mo said.

5. Everyone But One Is Ready To Come Back For Season Two Wendy asked the women if they would come back for season two of the show and all but one said yes. Guess which one? Kelly Price wouldn’t offer a definitive answer, but I can’t say that I blame her. There are so many people who don’t want to play “Secret Love” and “Friend of Mine” anymore because they don’t hear sweet sounds anymore so much as they do a mountain of wax falling in due to her piss poor behavior on the show. So I get it, but I don’t know, Kelly, maybe you can do an episode of Iyanla, Fix My Life and then show your softer side. Actually, how about you go and do that? Don’t let this be the last people see of you. I didn’t include Dawn Robinson because she’s already removed herself from the equation. Goodbye, Dawn. Good luck with your life, career and transportation. Call Cindy and Terry and quit playing.
