Serena Williams Wins Fifth US Open
Serena Williams won the U.S. Open on Sunday (Sept. 8) defending her 2012 title. Williams beat Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka to take home her fifth US Open title and $2.6 million in prize money. It is her 17th Grand Slam singles title overall.
The match was close until the end. Williams and Azarenka were neck and neck in the first set with Williams ultimately winning 7-5. Azarenka proved victorious in the second set, which went into a tiebreaker with the Belarusian blonde winning 7-6. But it was Williams who opened a can of whoop ass in the third set and won in a near shutout, 6-1.
"Vika's such a great opponent; she's such a fighter," Williams said after the match. "It was never over until match point."
