Straight Out Of Boston: Soul Clap Presents 'Dancing On The Charles' Compilation

May 9, 2013 - 7:11 pm by VIBE

"There once was a scene up in Boston, where things weren't nearly so awesome. So the kids went to Cambridge where people have knowledge and there the dance music did blossom!"

Who would have thought the city of Boston would house the next up-and-coming dance scene, but its infamous parties on the Charles River have shown that this is the town to watch. Soul Clap presents: Dancing On The Charles takes the talent and essence of these parties and sums it up in a convenient 10-track package so that a global audience can listen and experience the next wave of dance music and artists.

Check out a VIBE exclusive first listen of album below and scroll through the gallery to meet some of the album's Boston-based artists. ---->

Kon His music: "I've never been into gimmicks or trends, so overall I like to keep things simple and timeless, be it fashion or music." Being Boston: "Being born and raised in Boston, and having spun in every venue here since about 1990...I think it's important for DJs not to be afraid of having an identity, rather than playing what everybody else is playing. It's ok if you dont please all the people all the time. You build it, they come."

Bosq His music: "The track me and Kon did, "heaven" [by Matthew Larkin Cassell] is a bit of a departure from what I'm generally known for, which is afro-latin-disco-funk type things. For this one we got the chance to work with this phenomenal Matthew Larkin Cassell track, and really chop up and beef the hell out of it, but without making it some cheesey dance mix. I think it keeps with the spirit of the original well while still updating it and being very different." Being Boston: "The thing I would say Boston is best at is grinding. The sometimes limited nightlife mixed with cold ass winters keeps a lot of Boston producers in the labs more so than some other places I think. It's a very driven town, and I've noticed we are more of a 'actually do shit' than 'talk about doing shit' populous."

Chas Bronz His music: "My track 'Love Only You' is a homage to the dance music from my hometown of Chicago/Milwaukee. I would describe It as a soulful, upbeat, and funky Chicago house track. I grew up on all styles of music, however I specialize in funk, disco and disco house." Being Boston: "I know that there is no secret pertaining to the music industry here in Boston. We are an extremely diverse city, and a strong and loving community."

Joe Caserta His music: "My sound is the culmination of various algorithms, as well as...PSYCH!...I'd like to think that my sound is shaped by everything that has influenced me over the years: disco, house, R&B, hip hop, whatever." Being Boston: "Boston's biggest secrets to me (hopefully not for long) are the DJs and producers on this project. To have a group of artists working on their own music in their own spaces that come together with little to no regard for what the mainstream is, is something special to me."

John Barera His music: "My sound is a mixture of light and dark elements, musical and loose, with dusty drums and upfront basslines, and lots of my trusty Juno 106 synth. For my track I paired with my roomate Victor on vocals to delivier a bit of a romantic house tune." Being Boston: "Boston is a great place to make music. It's so relaxed for me and there is a very heathy creative atmosphere, all kinds of musicians and artists are passing though for gigs, and inspiration is in the air."
