The Date: March 2006
The Shameless Stunt: Game got a butterfly tattooed underneath his eye.
Why It Worked: You have to remember that facial tattoos weren't always (somewhat) socially acceptable. Back in '06, it was actually pretty freakin' weird to see a rapper walking around with a tatt on his face. And it was even weirder when you consider that Game got—of all things!—a butterfly. But, hey, it still has people talking, so we guess it served its' purpose.
Publicity Stunt 3
The Date: May 2007
The Shameless Stunt: Game made an appearance on the Beef IV DVD to announce that his third album, L.A.X., would be his last album.
Why It Worked: For whatever reason, people love to hear rappers talk about when they're going to retire. From Jay-Z to Lil Wayne, a handful of them have done it and it always gets a lot of attention. We're sure Game knew that when he made the statement announcing his plans to retire—and we're sure he loved talking to reporters about it afterwards.
Publicity Stunt 4
The Date: February 2009
The Shameless Stunt: During an interview with a radio station in Seattle, Game revealed that he was siding with 50 Cent in the beef between Fif and Rick Ross. But he also offered to help Ross face off against Fif if he wanted it.
Why It Worked: This stunt made us sit up and say, "WTF? Like, has this guy become so desperate for attention that he's actually willing to do this?" But we gave him the attention nonetheless, despite the fact that this was an obvious ploy by Game to use the 50 Cent/Rick Ross beef to his advantage.
Publicity Stunt 5
The Date: July 2009
The Shameless Stunt: Game released a song called "I'm So Wavy" that featured him throwing shots at Jay-Z as well as Amber Rose.
Why It Worked: Ohhhh, you thought "Uncle Otis" was Game's first attempt at getting Jay's attention? Think again. The Amber Rose diss was the thing that really got us, though, because it made us all think Kanye would take notice and throw some shots back at Game. It never happened, but Game made out like a bandit for a few moments while people enjoyed this track.
Publicity Stunt 6
The Date: November 2010
The Shameless Stunt: Game jumped on Twitter and tried to reunite with 50 Cent and the rest of the G-Unit by sending out tweets to them.
Why It Worked: Really, this was effective because we all sat staring at our Twitter feeds wondering when Fif was going to respond to him. He never really did, but the element of suspense kept us watching and put Game's name back into the headlines—in spite of the fact that The R.E.D. Album was nowhere near getting a release date.
Publicity Stunt 7
The Date: July 2011
The Shameless Stunt: Game released "Uncle Otis," a track recorded over a beat similar to Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Otis" that featured Game taking shots at the throne.
Why It Worked: Game knows that pretty much anyone who takes a shot at Hov gets some media attention. So even though Jay himself hasn't responded—and, most likely, won't respond—to him, Game capitalized off the sudden success of "Otis" last week by using it to get the attention of the Internet. And, for better or worse, isn't that really the name of the game nowadays? Pun fully intended.
