Voter's Recap: 7 Noteworthy Quotes From The Second 2016 Presidential Debate

October 10, 2016 - 12:45 pm by Mawuena Sededo

Before you head to the polls during this year's election, take these statements by each party into consideration.

Sunday night’s debate premiered with high anticipation as Donald Trump’s latest controversial comment about being able to grab women by their genitals has landed him in the hot seat. Not only has Mr. Trump’s inappropriate comment alienated few independent voters, this comment caused a mass exodus of his fellow party members jumping ship and rescinding their endorsements. However, voters and pundits alike wondered if his lewd comments about women would have any effect on his debate performance.

It was almost expected for the comments to be addressed, but debate moderators Anderson Cooper and Martha Raddatz jumped right into the controversy within the first ten minutes of the debate, leaving the rest of the debate to the two candidates to discuss the issues important to voters. Flip through seven of the standout statements from both candidates during Round 2 of the 2016 Presidential Debate.

The next and final debate airs on Wednesday, October 19 at 9pm EST from Las Vegas, Nevada. Stay tuned to see how your favorite candidate will fare with only a month left before election day.

Jumping right into the heat of the controversy, Donald Trump apologized  for his lewd comments about women – referring to it as “locker room talk.” However, Clinton was unfazed by his apology to the American people. During the course of her response, she brought up Trump’s harsh language toward Mexicans, Muslims, POW’s, and more, signaling that this type of behavior is not anything out of the ordinary for Trump – only solidifying her argument that he is unfit to be president.

Obamacare was undoubtedly going to be a hot topic due to President Bill Clinton’s recent remarks about the implementation of Obamacare. When asked about the program, Bill Clinton responded, "So you've got this crazy system where all of a sudden 25 million more people have health care and then the people who are out there busting it, sometimes 60 hours a week, wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half,” Clinton said. “It's the craziest thing in the world.” Unfortunately for Hillary, there is some truth to Bill’s comment. According to Politico, individual premiums for Obamacare are expected to rise almost 24 percent, higher than it has ever been in past years. However, premiums are also undoubtedly based on government subsidies that affect individuals according to their income levels. This comment no doubt gave the Trump campaign ammunition, prompting Hillary to step up and defend the initiative in order to demonstrate party unity with our current Commander-in-Chief.

One definite highlight of the night came when a young Muslim woman asked the two candidates what they would do about the growing Islamophobia in our nation. This question certainly put Trump in the hot seat, as he is on record advocating for a complete and total shut down of Muslim’s entering this country. Additionally, he called for racial profiling on those who are suspected to be Muslim terrorist. Still, Trump did not recant his statements, only reiterating his calls to carefully vet Muslim immigrants who come into the United States. Trump then went on to accuse Clinton of not using the term “radical Islamic terrorism,” which is simply untrue. In an interview with NBC immediately after the Orlando nightclub shooting in June, Clinton used the phrase “radical Islamism,” breaking away from President Obama’s choice not to use those words.

Many may remember the Khan family from the Democratic National Convention, where Captain Khan’s father got on stage and told the heart wrenching story of how his son risked his life for this nation. And while Hillary Clinton reiterates regret for her vote in favor of the war, Trump continues to maintain his stance that he was opposed to the war. However, when asked in 2003 if he supports military intervention in Iraq, Trump responded, “Yeah, I guess so.”

Over the past couple of months, the Clinton campaign has been hit with a barrage of leaks aiming to shed light to some more unfavorable aspects of her campaign and business dealings. The most recent leak came from the very same Wall Street speech transcripts that Bernie demanded to be released. In these transcripts, you can hear Hillary suggesting that sometimes in politics, you have to be one person in public and another person in private. However, during the debate Clinton revealed that she was actually referring to President Abraham Lincoln and his quest to ratify the 13th Amendment. And although the United States government has formally revealed that it is indeed Russia behind these cyber attacks, there is no evidence that supports Clinton’s claims that these leaks are intended to influence the election. In fact, it is important to note that GOP targets have been hit as well, most notably former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

In a desperate attempt to take the heat off of his interview with Billy Bush, Trump turned the heat right back on Hillary and the recent accusations of her questionable primary win regarding the Democratic National Committee. In an onslaught of emails leaked by WikiLeaks, documents revealed that primary Democratic nominee Bernie Sanders was at a disadvantage as DNC staffers pondered different ways to hurt his campaign, such as capitalizing on the fact that Senator Sanders does not actively practice any religion. And while DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has since resigned from her position, she still was invited to come onboard as a key part of the Clinton campaign, leaving many Sanders supporters in shock and disappointment.

While presidential debates can be intense and downright cutthroat, this debate ended on a lighter note as each candidate revealed what they respected about one another. Hillary revealed that she has tremendous respect for the Trump children, saying how the way they conduct themselves casts a positive reflection on Donald Trump as a person. On the other hand, Trump revealed that he admires how hard a fighter Hillary Clinton is, as whenever things get tough, she keeps going.
