X Games: 5 Things You Need To Know About Xbox One

May 22, 2013 - 5:40 pm by Christopher Harris

Gamers are salivating over the upcoming release of Microsoft's latest gaming console, the Xbox One. It's been eight years since the Xbox 360 first hit shelves with over 70 million units selling to date. With a scheduled release set for later this year, the anticipation continues to build over what Wired is calling an "entertainment borg" that hopes to assimilate everything from your Blu-ray player to your cable box.
Click through the gallery to check out five essential things you need to know about the Xbox One.

Updated Controller
The gaudy battery pack will no longer be included on the new system's controller. Its previous circular directional pad has also been replaced by a cross-shaped one for more precision. Microsoft has developed deeper Smartglass support as well so you'll be able to use your smartphone or tablet to display secondary information.

The Kinect
Just when you thought virtual gaming couldn't become any more advanced, Microsoft's slew of enhancements to its Kinect features are sure to take this system to the next level.
The "wake on" voice control allows users to turn their system on by simply saying "Xbox on." A larger 1080p camera increases the sensor's field by 60 percent, allowing for more space for the Dance Dance Revolution enthusiasts. The new Kinect sensor will also be able to detect the amount of people in a room based on voices and suggest appropriate multi-player games.

Skype Accessibility
Microsoft purchased the voice over iP service Skype in 2011, to kick its Windows Live Messenger services to the curb. The built-in Skype features will become the default communications platform rather than the Xbox Live chat system. Skype is expected to play a huge role in the overall experience. The application's integration will allow you to watch a television show or play a game while carrying on a conversation.

'Halo' TV Series
One of the surprise announcements at the Xbox One unveiling was the news that the console had partnered with Academy-award winning director Steven Spielberg to produce a live-action television series based on one of Xbox's marquee games "Halo." Xbox Entertainment Studios plans to begin producing original programming such as movies, sitcoms, live events and digital shorts.

Windows Azure
Three years ago, Microsoft introduced its innovative cloud-computing platform Windows Azure. The Xbox One will come equipped with the program and it is sure to rev up the play on Xbox Live. Multi-player sessions will now be able to host up to 128 users in a single session. Gamers will also be able to sync their achievements and games, and pick up where they left off from any location they chose.
The XBox One is slated to hit shelves this year. You down to play?
